Cnr Kembla and Burelli Sts, Wollongong Sunday @ 9.45am
Here at City Central Presbyterian Church we believe that God has given His church a great gift in music. We find that music helps us to express to God our thankfulness to Him in what He has done in our lives and it is also provides a means whereby we can encourage others in their life of trusting in Jesus. At the same time we are aware that, as with all of the great gifts that God has given us, as humans we tend to mix up what is important at times. We believe that this confusion can come with music when it becomes the end in its self rather than serving the above purposes.
What we want to do as a church is to see the songs that we sing and the music that accompanies these songs to help us engage with our whole life, not just as a religious exercise we do on Sundays. When choosing the style of music we want to engage thoughtfully with both contemporary culture and the ancient traditions that have encouraged generations of Christians.
We are aware that music can have an impact on our emotions. So we want to present our singing in a kind of way that is not manipulative but recognizes that emotional expression is important to us as humans.
It was said of one of the great writers of Christian songs Charles Wesley that he saturated his songs with God’s word. And this is the focus we want to have with the songs that we sing. We want the songs that we sing whether they are old or new, tightly reflecting the biblical passages that are being preached on and aid us in our overall understanding and love for our God and His words to us.
As a community of believers who come from broad backgrounds of cultures and generational influences we want to come together and celebrate in this wonderful gift of music the new life we have in our precious saviour the Lord Jesus Christ.
