Gentle and Lowly

John 21

* Introduction:

  • Entering the disciples’ headspace, post-resurrection:
    • Peter: bravado … denial … guilt
    • Thomas: submission … doubt … guilt
    • John: certainty … confusion … guilt?
    • James and two others? … ???
  • The frustration of a night of fruitless fishing
  • The added insult of alien advice
  • The remarkable revelation and realisation!
    • Peter’s options: to run away from or towards the Lord
      • our options?

* Jesus’ gentle reinstatement of Peter

  • the size of the catch and the strength of the net
    • What might we learn from this?
  • the gracious provision of breakfast – a reminder of John 6?
  • Jesus meets us where we are:
    1. “Simon, do you truly love me?”

– “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you”

– “Feed my lambs”

    1. “Simon, do you truly love me?”

– “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you”

– “Take care of my sheep”

    1. “Simon, do you love me?”

– “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you”

– “Feed my sheep”

  • the ‘hidden’ gravitas of 2 Peter 1:5-7

* Peter entrusted with suffering (verses 18-19)

– cf Philippians 1:29

“For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him

* John entrusted with bearing witness (verses 20-25)

* With what has the ‘gentle and lowly’ Jesus entrusted you?

  • How does his dealing with Peter and John encourage you?
  • The difficulty we have with “What about him/her?”

– cf Romans 12:15-18

“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.  Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil.  Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”

Gathering again (updated 5/7/2020)

To be Covid-Safe we are allowed 72 people in the Church building and 42 people in the hall at any one time. We are doing Church “live” that is with people physically leading the gathering and preaching up the front of the building (not on the screen). And we also hope to have a Covid-Safe morning tea.

For this to take place we will need extra people to help in serving. We will need a Covid-Safe welcoming and ushering team, more people to ensure we serve morning tea following the new health department guidelines and an expanded technical team to ensure our live stream and in house audio/visuals work effectively.
